Andrea Renda

I am an artisan of words and sounds.
Time is my favourite space.

(a) About

About me

I run research at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), where I lead the team on global governance, regulation, innovation and the digital economy. Until September this year I taught "Regulation of Emerging Technologies" at the European University Institute's School of Transnational Governance in Florence, and I still teach AI policy, ethics and governance as Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, in Bruges and Natolin.

I work close to the people writing the rules. I'm Vice Chair of the European Commission's ESIR advisory group at DG Research and Innovation and sit on the Joint Research Centre's expert group on a "Fair and Sustainable Economy." I co-direct the Brookings/CEPS Forum for Global Cooperation on AI, co-chair the OECD's Working Group on AI Risk and Accountability, chair the AI Committee of AGCOM (Italy's telecoms and media regulator), and — through January 2028 — serve as a non-executive director at Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu.

I write and speak constantly, and I advise widely: the European Commission and Parliament, the OECD, the World Bank, UNESCO and more. I sit on the editorial boards of Telecommunications Policy, the European Journal of Risk Regulation and Digital Policy, Regulation and Governance. I've also helped build AI governance as it happened — on the EU's High-Level Expert Group on AI and Italy's AI Task Force — and I direct the Trade and Technology Dialogue, the EU-funded project supporting all ten working groups of the EU–U.S. Trade and Technology Council.

There's another life running alongside all of this. I've been a musician since I was nine — a guitarist and vocalist with one album, "Lives I Haven't Lived," and years spent playing, writing and recording in parallel with my academic work. I'm married to Rosa, we have two kids, and we live in Brussels. When I can, I'm off travelling the world.
